I haven't read the book or seen the previous movie. So, I started this at ground zero. I knew what the story was about, but not the details of it.
Let me begin with the positive. The acting in the movie is very good. Bette Midler and Nicole Kidman are both great actresses and so is Glenn Close. Roger Bart stole the show as the flamboyant gay "wife". Christopher Walken and Matthew Broderick were good as well.
The movie had several moments that were positively hilarious, but it also had such a serious kind of creepy tone that I was unsure if it was ok to laugh. I never felt like it was completely a comedy or a serious movie. This was unsettling.
The plot of the movie is, as most people know, that a group of men bring their wives to Stepford, CT and turn them into perfect robots. Creepy... wierd.
The movie makes you never want to enter a gated community again in your life, especially if you are a woman. But even as a man I would want to run far far away from these people.
Overall, I was left with a kind of empty feeling about the movie. I think if I saw it again and just decided that it was a pure comedy I would laugh a lot more. So, if you haven't seen it already.... think "this is a comedy" when you walk in and laugh. It is Ok to do so.
